12 Small Businesses We Can’t Get Enough Of
When it comes to small businesses, we’re big fans here at Blackline. Bringing unique character and creativity to every corner of the UK, small businesses continue to inspire us with exciting new brands emerging both online and on the high street. From passionate entrepreneurs to innovative ideas, they remind us why shopping local and supporting independent brands truly matters. They’re not just the heart of our communities but also the backbone of our economy.
Here’s just a small selection of our favourite UK-based small businesses, from coffee shops and fashion brands to restaurants and bars.
Juli’s picks:
The Nunhead Gardener, Elephant and Castle
“This is one of my favourite spots, not only because of the amazing plants but because the staff are so welcoming and knowledgeable. They’re always happy to offer advice, even if you are new to plants and ask a million questions like me. It’s just a lovely place to pick up a new plant and feel completely looked after, with an atmosphere that’s always friendly and relaxed.”
Cuemars, Spitalfields
“Cuemars is an independent shop in Spitalfields with a great selection of art books, unique pieces, and homeware. It’s the perfect spot to find something special. Whether it’s a quirky gift or a cool piece for the home, there’s always something that catches my eye. I just enjoy wandering around looking for inspiration and discovering new, unexpected finds.”
Hannah’s picks:
Un:ik Clothing
“As someone who owns about a thousand white t-shirts, I wanted to inject a bit of personality into my wardrobe when I came across these guys. I love the playfulness and sense of humour in their designs! Pasta is always good, and t-shirts with pasta references are even better.”
Little Hollows Pasta Co, Bristol
“Continuing my pasta obsession, the food here is delicious, and it’s all made fresh. They do one thing, and they do it really well. The restaurant is only small but has a lovely intimate, relaxed atmosphere. The definition of cosy and the perfect place to catch up with friends or celebrate a special occasion.”
Andy’s picks:
Carter and George Physiotherapy
“Without fail, the go-to ‘fix me I’m broken and need re-charging’ physio for every high street. From dislocated knees to MCLs in young sports stars to pro-lapsed discs for ageing sports (not stars!), Carter and George have fixed the family and recharged our sports batteries. The quality of service from reception to recovery is exceptional. “
High Grade Coffee, Brick Lane
“I really admire High Grade because they’ve managed to grow their business while staying true to their roots. They put so much care into everything they do, whether it’s their incredible coffee or how they treat their customers. What I love most is how they’ve adapted and found creative ways to thrive in a tough market. High Grade is proof that with passion and a smart approach, small businesses can achieve brilliant things.”
Nigel’s picks:
Wear London
“Based just round the corner from the office they offer something different in terms of style. As a, shall we say, slightly older man, they make you feel welcome and always willing to offer much needed advice. I am attracted to their values of manufacturing as much as they can in the UK and bring very conscious of minimising the footprint they leave.”
Delamina East
“The menu caught my eye when walking past and the next time I needed a restaurant I booked. What a find – the food is amazing, the staff friendly and like all good restaurants, it is always busy. They do however do everything they can to squeeze you in without a reservation.
Inspired by the owner’s upbringing, the food is described as fusion eastern Mediterranean home cooking and is amazing. The mix of herbs and spices make every dish mouthwatering and what they do with a humble cauliflower is incredible. Everybody I’ve taken there has returned with others and continued to spread the word.”
Frida’s picks:
Bags By Monty
“I truly love this brand as it offers unique bags that are both sustainable and affordable. Their designs are colourful and fun, and you can get your favourite colourway in many different shapes and sizes.”
Bone Idyll, Kingston-upon-Thames
“As a gin-lover, I love exploring unique and locally-made spirits. I discovered the Kingston-based company while working in the area. Creative designs, good drinks, and quality gin are a few of the reasons I love them! As well as the great atmosphere and friendliness in their bar in Kingston.”
Claire’s picks:
Rise Brunch, Preston & York
“Rise has been a firm favourite of mine since opening its doors in Preston in 2019 in the beautiful setting of Miller Arcade. It might look like an Instagrammer’s dream (and it absolutely is) with its bright and bubbly interiors and photo-worthy food, but trust me when I say this is all style and ALL substance. Their food is delicious and never fails to impress. My go-to spot for a grab-and-go coffee and breakfast roll or a catch-up with friends over their incredible cinnamon French toast. They’ve become so popular that they’ve since expanded into York and opened a second Preston location!”
Piccadilly Records, Manchester
“Whenever I’m in Manchester, I always have to stop off at Piccadilly Records for a browse. It’s been a Manchester staple since 1978 and a bit of a Northern Quarter landmark since opening its Oldham Street store in the late 90s, and has such a great selection of music that I rarely leave empty-handed. The staff are super knowledgeable and helpful, and even though Manchester has an abundance of record stores, there’s something about this one that I love.”
